During the past decade, thanks to the generosity of individuals and organizations alike, the foundation has raised more than $1.75 million and distributed more than $1,500,000 to the police department through grants and contributions to support professional development, equipment purchases, and a variety of other programs. Police Foundation of Colorado Springs relies on support from individuals and organizations to champion the efforts of CSPD and we  encourage our neighbors, our businesses, and our community to come alongside to help strengthen and build the community.

CSPD K9 Roam Receives Generous Outpouring of Support from Local Community and Around the World through Police Foundation of Colorado Springs

The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) wishes to thank the community and beyond for the donations made through the Police Foundation of Colorado Springs to support K9 Roam’s initial recovery and ongoing medical care.

Over the past week, the Police Foundation of Colorado Springs has received more than  $68,000 in donations for Roam’s care. While the majority of donations have come from the Colorado Springs area and the state of Colorado, donations have also been received from 32 states and from as far away as Canada, the UK, and Belgium.

K9 Roam was gravely injured in the line of duty on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while working to help bring a barricaded suspect into custody. Roam was stabbed multiple times, suffering lacerations to his head and abdomen. He was rushed to Animal ER Care in Colorado Springs, where Dr. Danika Hayden and Dr. Abby Sticker, along with support staff, stabilized him before he was taken into emergency surgery with Dr. Michelle Morgan and Dr. Michelle Hasuik at Mountain View Veterinary Surgery. Roam was in desperate need of blood, and after using existing blood supplies on hand, HemoSolutions, a local animal blood bank, immediately stepped forward, sending staff and equipment to Animal ER Care to facilitate blood donations by other working K9 dogs that were critical in Roam’s surgery. After several hours of surgery that included the amputation of his left hind leg, Roam emerged in critical condition. Roam made steady improvement over the next couple of days and was miraculously able to go home with his handler on Saturday, October 18. Hundreds of supportive community members lined his route home near his assigned division, holding signs, flags, and cheering him on.

CSPD is deeply moved by the compassion and generosity shown by residents, businesses, and partner organizations, as well as the donations that have come into the Police Foundation from across the state, county, and world.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received,” said Chief Adrian Vasquez. “K9 Roam is not only a valued member of our department but also a symbol of the courage and dedication our officers bring to the community every day. The kindness shown to K9 Roam by our community, nation, and from around the world is a reminder of why we serve.”

“It is always tragic when an officer, K9 or human, is injured in the line of duty. K9 Roam is an example of surviving the unthinkable and what it means to protect and serve, “said Nicole Magic, Executive Director/President of the Police Foundation. “Our mission at Police Foundation of Colorado Springs is to build effective partnerships that support the Colorado Springs Police Department and our local community, and we have seen our community and businesses coming together to support our police department.”

The Police Foundation will continue to accept donations for Roam’s care and will also sell #Rooting for Roam wrist bracelets and 2026 CSPD K9 unit calendars, which feature Roam.

The foundation also has a Roam plush K9 in production and will be available in about a month.  All proceeds from these sales go to the Police Foundation and will be used exclusively for Roam’s medical care and to support the CSPD K9 Unit. These restricted funds will be held in an account within Police Foundation of Colorado Springs.

The Police Foundation of Colorado Springs is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established to strengthen the services of the Colorado Springs Police Department by providing resources not otherwise available through traditional city funding.
